Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 30 minutes of draw.

 

Specimen Type: Whole blood-Clotted blood is not acceptable.
Container/Tube: Heparinized blood gas syringe

Specimen Volume: 2 mL

Specimen Minimum Volume: 1 mL
Collection Instructions:

1. Draw arterial blood anaerobically.

2. Expel air bubbles, remove needle from syringe and cap-Air bubble is not acceptable.

3. Immediately place syringe on wet ice.

Stability

Analyze immediately after collection. Samples older than 20 minutes should be placed on ice.

Reference Range

pH Art: 7.35-7.45

pCO2 Art: 33-47 mmHg

pO2 Art: 80-100 mmHg

O2 Sat Art: 95-98%

HCO3 Art: reference range is not established.

Base Excess Art: reference range is not established.

CO2 Total Art: reference range is not established.

Alv-Art Gradient: reference range is not established.
